Developers of the Professor Layton team up with Studio Ghibli for a awesome new adventure

At a press conference in Japan today, Level 5 took the wraps off their next big game and announced their partnership with Studio Ghibli- the famous animation studio behind films such as Spirited Away and Ponyo. Ni no Kuni is heading to the Playstation 3 and the Nintendo DS with the Nintendo DS version being stored on a huge 4GB card which not only contains all of the art and animation but also a full orchestrated soundtrack. The DS version will also come with a massive 350-page manual that you will be essential when playing through the game. Players will need to frequently refer to book to learn how to interact and communicate with the creatures in the games world.

The book is a comprehensive tome- youll learn how to greet the different races in the game, cast spells, recipes for spells and more. Naturally, a release outside of Japan wasnt announced at an event like this, but the new North American office for Level 5 might be tasked to it.

The PS3 version that is also in the works will have a similar gameplay experience but of course present all the artwork in HD. However, at the end of the day, both the PS3 and DS versions will look excellent.

The CEO confirms Nintendos wider embrace of external publishers and intent to work more closely with developers

At E3, Nintendo boasted of the enormous third-party support behind the 3DS, with titles like Resident Evil Revelations, Dead or Alive 3D and Pro Evolution Soccer among many others already in development for the console.

In an interview with Nikkei, Satoru Iwata revealed that Nintendo has shifted in focus from first- to third-party development after recognising that the current DS games cater for the expanded audience just a little too much. As such, Iwata wants the 3DS to feature "elaborate games targeting serious gamers", and says Nintendo went the extra mile when making the 3DS by incorporating the ideas of software developers. Iwata believes "these partnerships are good for both Nintendo and the software developers".

Iwata also addressed speculation that the Wiis successor would support 3D output, saying that it will be a while before we see this on a home console "because 3D televisions will not catch on right away".

More info has been revealed for the all-new 3DS Kingdom Hearts game, as well as the one on the way for DS

Theres two new Kingdom Heart games on the way for Nintendo consoles- the newly revealed Nintendo 3DS version and the mobile phone port of Kingdom Hearts Re:Coded.

Speaking to Famitsu magazine, Kingdom Hearts director Tetsuya Nomura has confirmed that the new entry for the Nintendo 3DS is an entirely new game and the next stage in the franchise. Sora and Riku return as playable characters in the game. More information is expected to be hinted through the other upcoming Re:Coded game for the DS and eventually at next years E3. This one is still a while away folks.

Nomura has also spoken about the upcoming Nintendo DS game. Yes, its a port of a mobile phone game but the software is being reengineered for the handheld and will see many changes. The game will be targeted towards more casual gamers, no doubt in a bid to get more people to check out the franchise. The game is also being tweaked to take on board additions from the other Kingdom Heart games 358/2 Days and Birth by Sleep, with development currently about 80% complete.

Looks like Kingdom Hearts fans will have more than enough to play for some time yet.

One of the interesting, new developments with the Nintendo Wii system is the Mii Channel. The Mii system allows you to create 3-D avatars on your Wii system. Nintendo is launching an online Mii Channel that will allow users to share these avatars and vote on them. Wii users love the ability to create avatar models of themselves, their friends, and families to take part in traditional video game roles. The increase in video games allowing users to manifest as their own Mii is also sure to increase. As users can save their Mii on their Wii system and use the same avatar to play different games, it is also hoped that this system will advance to allow the avatars to enter into other online virtual worlds. The future for this system has a lot of possibilities for video game players. An advanced Mii system will first have to incorporate better design tools and graphics for the avatars.

Users will want to spend their time to create avatars with all of the characteristics they need to enter and play the video games. These avatars should also be able to incorporate their own tools or gadgets from game to game, or platform to platform. Having the avatars able to be customized in this manner, different avatars with various configurations of features, accessories, spells, and so forth can be saved on the game box like the Wii. If the Mii avatar can be made to apply in a wider variety of game applications, including online MMORG environments, then it will be an interesting success.

The worry is that allowing avatars to carry gadgets from other systems in games that were not designed for them could completely change the game itself. But the advantages of having an avatar with all of the attributes, accessories, and additions one wants ready, before entering the game’s environment to participate is clear. The ability to carry acquisitions found in one game by the avatar into another game is also interesting. A lot of new possibilities for video game development exist in the further expansion of the Mii avatar on the Nintendo Wii gaming system, and into other platforms.

Sin and Punishment: Star Successor (Wii)
Nintendo shows us just how the pros play next week's Wii release.
Mario is leaving for his next adventure and he wants to say a final goodbye. Theres also a unique prize up for grabs

With the upcoming release of Super Mario Galaxy 2 on July 1, Mario and his best friend, TV and radio personality Jabba, want to celebrate by establishing a Guinness World Record. The record will be for the most amount of hugs by a mascot character in 20 minutes, Mario hopes to hug at least 108 people. The current record is held by Teddy McHuggin (aka Jeff Ondash), a mascot for the American Heart Foundation.

Every hugger who helps with the record attempt will get a photo with Mario and be one of the first in Australia (and we use the term loosely) to play Super Mario Galaxy 2. There will also be prizes for best dressed in a Super Mario Galaxy 2 theme, and other competitions throughout the morning.

And one of the great prizes has been revealed, it’s a signed copy of Super Mario Galaxy 2. Who has signed it? Well none other than Shigeru Miyomoto, you may have heard of him.

So if you’re down in Melbourne and wanna be part of the fun, head on over to the Nintendo Connection at EB Games, Swanston Street, at 7am on July 1. Let’s just hope that the Brits don’t steal this one away from us too.

Super Mario takes off into the Galaxy - Give him a hug goodbye!

PLUS A SIGNED COPY OF SUPER MARIO GALAXY 2 BY MR MIYOMOTO IS UP FOR GRABS!!!

Mario is jetting off into the galaxy on 1 July and we want you to send him off with a final hug! In fact, we want to establish a record.

To celebrate the much anticipated launch of Super Mario Galaxy 2, (available in stores July 1) Mario himself, and TV and radio personality Jabba will be at The Nintendo Experience, EB Games, Swanston Street, Melbourne at 7:00am, July 1 to establish the record for the most amount of hugs by a mascot character in 20 minutes!

The current world record was established by a 51 year old Ohio man, Jeff Ondash on Valentine’s Day 2010. Jeff hugged an amazing 7,777 in a 24 hour period outside the Paris Las Vegas hotel-casino on the Las Vegas Strip. Unfortunately Mario needs a rest after 20 minutes (it’s tiring jumping around and collecting all those coins)! For this reason, Mario will hope to hug more than 108 people in 20 minutes to establish a new record for a character mascot.

To commemorate this, every hugger who attends on the day will get their own personal photo of the occasion and will be one of the first in Australia to experience the spectacular new items and new stages of the 3D galactic video game, Super Mario Galaxy 2. They will be the first to run, jump and fly through a 3D dazzling galaxy, bursting with imagination.

Plus everyone that purchases or collects their pre-order copy of Super Mario Galaxy 2 from EB Games Swanston Street on 1 July, between 7am – 8:30am will have their chance to win a signed copy of the game, by Mr Miyomoto!!! This is a unique copy, signed by the genius behind Mario. Make sure you pre-order your copy today at EB Games, Swanston Street for your chance to WIN!

Please note, you must be at EB Games, Swanston Street, Melbourne for the draw at 8:30am, July 1, to collect the signed game if you are the lucky winner.

There will also be giveaways up for grabs for the best dressed, as well as competitions throughout the morning. So get your best Super Mario Galaxy 2 themed outfits ready and be part of the fun on July 1!

An impressive graphics display is on show in the upcoming 3DS survival horror game

Capcom have released a trailer for the upcoming handheld Resident Evil. While not in 3D, you can still experience the great graphics in the trailer and get a hint at whats to come for the new game. The game has since also been revealed to be running on the MT Framework engine that most of Capcoms new games have been built upon. Its great to see that the engine has been re-tooled to work on the 3DS and the results are very impressive.

Resident Evil: Revelation was one of many surprise announcements from Nintendos third party partners when they unveiled the 3DS last week. The game features veteran characters Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine and were expecting it to launch alongside the 3DS when it is released next year.

Satoru Iwata has acknowledged that the online experience for Wii isnt as good as it could be

Iwata, the head of Nintendo in Japan, met with investors whilst in LA for E3 last week to discuss Nintendos current position and their plans for moving forward. He discussed why online functionality was not included in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, citing that the Wiis limited capability for online play would not have ensured a positive gaming experience. "I think that his (Miyamotos) decision on whether or not to include online functionality with New Super Mario Bros. Wii was based on the idea that the true value of that product was going to be determined not by online functionality, but on how compelling and unique the experience would be for two, three or four people to be able to play that game together in the same room."

Iwata then acknowledged the gaming communitys sentiments towards the Wiis online functionality. "I have heard commentary that people feel that Nintendos online functionality is behind the others or is lacking in some ways." The good news here of course is that Nintendo recognises poor online on the Wii as something that can be fixed. "I can say that we are not currently satisfied with the online efforts that we have made so far, and we are working at ways to improve those," said Iwata.

The compromise here is that we may not see the same level of support for improved online accessibility for all games on the Wii and future platforms. Nintendo has stated that developing a high standard of online coding for a game is taxing on resources and that not every game is worthy of such attention. With a strong line-up of multiplayer-centric titles such as Mario Kart and Smash Bros., however, the hardcore faithful may be comforted that their multiplayer franchise of choice may indeed benefit from improved online support from Nintendo in future.

One of the common criticisms levied against Nintendo platforms is that they don't get enough third-party support. Instead, the majority of the best-selling games on both the Wii and DS are made by Nintendo. The company is looking to change all of that, however, with its recently unveiled 3DS.

"One of the major objectives of our E3 was to stress that it's important for Nintendo that we get this level of support from partners," Nintendo of Europe's Laurent Fischer told GamesIndustry.biz. "Of course we're happy about it, but it's more than we would have dreamed of with such support from our partners at this new time for consoles."

With the 3DS, Nintendo is looking to attract both consumers and developers.

According to Fischer, there are currently around 70 games—both first and third party—in the works for the new handheld, including titles from Konami, Capcom, Ubisoft, and Activision.

"For hardware that started its public life only days ago that's amazing, and what I was pleased with was you can see very, very strong support from everyone. You can see from the line-up that we have huge titles that no other publisher is doing, without us thinking twice about it. I couldn't see any publisher that isn't very motivated by the console so we're really pleased by that."

The Nintendo 3DS still doesn't have a release date, but you can check out our hands-on impressions from E3 for further details.
