Can someone help me with my wii controller problem?

Please don’t judge me. I’m new with the wii thing. My controller is not working correctly. Apparently there’s supposed to be a sensor thing and when I try to use the buttons on the menu it doesn’t work. The menu and + – buttons work, but nothing else. Please help.
