The New Super Mario Bros. games were great—it's pretty hard not to like a 2D Mario game—but they still felt like something was missing. The design and level of creativity just wasn't up there with some of the earlier Mario games. They were missing that magic. One enterprising modder has decided to try and fix this by creating a hack for the DS version of NSMB that recreates SMB3 using the more modern engine.
The hack is being offered as a free download, and the creator warns "This is just a fangame, nothing more...Please remember, don't download this if you [don't have] the original game from Nintendo! You have been warned!!"
A rather lengthy gameplay video is available, and it shows off pretty much just what you'd expect. These are the levels you know from the original, but with the 2.5D visual style of the more recent releases. That means you'll get to see airships and the big world, as well as a few new creations from the developer of the hack. But it also looks like there's one important aspect missing: the power ups. Based on the trailer it appears that this remix will be devoid of the racoon tail, Tanooki suit, warp whistles, and other special powers that were unique to SMB3. So don't expect to hide behind any white blocks.
But it's still the same levels and it's free, which should be good for a healthy dose of nostalgia on the go. Just remember, this is going to require a flashcart to run, and Nintendo should be smacking it down just about any second now.
