Legendary Designer talks up Retros ability to make content

Retro is being considered for possible Zelda collaboration by head designer Shigeru Miyamoto, who seems damn impressed by the studios previous efforts. Specifically the ability of the studio to create courses for Mario Kart within the framework that was actively being designed in Japan by EAD.

"So for each of the different courses, we could identify: Retro is supposed to take care of this course, and EAD is going to do that, and such and such. Then, we were able to join forces in order to realize a variety of different courses, a variety of different tastes. I think thats one reason how it worked out well between a Japanese development team and a Western development team."

Miyamoto went on to say that Japanese and Western design studios seem to be better at developing different kind of games, which then appeal to different audience in his mind. He went on to say that Western RPG design philosophies hadnt influenced the development of Skyward Sword, particularly the crafting and open nature of the world. He also doesnt personally feel interested in turning Link into a more definite, voice acted character.

" I mean, by having the voice actor speaking out the main character’s opinions and messages, I’m afraid that they are going to narrow down the actual characteristics that people can imagine or apply to each character they are controlling, for example."

Thanks for the interview, Wired.
